A backlit blackberry leaf reveals colorful traces left by a small leaf-mining Stigmella caterpillar. The size of the mine shows how the caterpillar grew larger and larger as it ate itself a way through the leaf. The black dots are its excrements. Thiérache, France.

This Filoboletus fungus is thought to glow in the dark to attract insects that help it disperse its spores. Mycologist Luis Morgado studies it in the light of a red torch, allowing his eyes to remain adjusted to the dark. Crocker Range, Borneo.

A lower pitcher of Nepenthes rajah on Mount Kinabalu. This species produces the largest pitchers of all pitcher plants. It is extremely rare and occurs only on the higher slopes of Mount Kinabalu and neighboring Mount Tambuyukon.

As it sips nectar from a creeping thistle flower with its long proboscis, the hummingbird hawk moth hovers with its body suspended motionless in the air and its wings flapping almost too fast to see. To cope with the demands of hover flight, hawk moths have evolved thermoregulation—they are warm-blooded.
For a few days every summer the river Oise colors white with river water-crowfoot (Ranunculus fluitans) flowers. This plant's long stems grow almost completely submerged, but the flowers break the surface so insects can pollinate them. Thiérache, France. The 'toilet' pitcher plant (Nepenthes lowii), attracts shrews and other small animals with nectar. As they sit on the peristome to feed on this delicacy, they defecate into the pitcher, providing the plant with otherwise scarce nutrients. N. lowii is endemic to Mt Kinabalu and neighboring Mt Tamboyukon.
